This morning, hubby and I walked the Memorial Causeway to Clearwater Beach. It is always a treat when hubby joins me for a walk. We went around 7, before it got to be about 500 degrees outside. It was a beautiful morning. The view over the bridge and causeway are always amazing to me and reminds me how lucky we are to live here.
After our walk (5.33 miles!) and a quick stop at Starbucks, we headed home and got ready to head back out again. During our walk, we had talked about how I need to start looking at new running shoes soon. Hubby asked if I had any in mind and I told him no, that I wanted to go somewhere and have gait analysis done so I know I am buying the right shoes. With another half-marathon coming up, as well as a 10K and 5K, I wanted a nice pair of shoes to get me through. We decided to head over the Fit2Run at International Plaza. (Thank you Beth for giving me a heads up on who to talk to!)
When we got there, I was helped right away by Gary and a few questions later to see where I’m at with my running, I stepped on a nifty machine, sans shoes, that determined how the weight is distributed when I stand. I never knew this, but I have high arches. The most weight is on my heels and the balls of my feet, more so on my left foot. He then measured my feet for correct show size and looked at the shoes I wore in, which are the Saucony’s I bought in March.
A few minutes later, I was in a pair of Asics and hopping on the treadmill so Gary could video tape my awesome running skills. I ran for about 30 seconds and then we watched it in slow motion. He said that I am a “neutral runner” as my ankles don’t roll out or in on impact. He also that the shoes I am wearing now are not the right ones for that (and they are also more of a track shoe, not made for long distance). Neither were the pair of Brooks Adrenaline I had before, which I wore for the Rock N Roll Half Marathon (oops). Both had support on the inside of my feet, which I don’t need, and that was causing my shoes to wear more on the outside. It was so exciting to learn all this.
Based on this information, Gary brought out two more pares of shoes – Saucony and Brooks. After trying all of them on, it was no surprise that I liked the Brooks the best. There is nothing like putting on a pair of shoes that fit just right. I originally tried on the blue pair, but when I learned that had pink ones, well I had to get the pink ones. Aren’t they fabulous? I can’t wait to break them in tomorrow morning!

We checked out the rest of the store and I also got a cool water bottle with a pocket for my cell phone. Again, lots of color options and I picked the pink. Do you see a pattern here?
I also decided to sign up for the Club Fit2Run membership. For $30 a year, you get a discount on everything in the store and a 30-day wear test guarantee on all running footwear. Sadly, it does not guarantee I’ll look this good while running… Darn!
I also picked up two books I’ve had my eye on at Barnes & Noble. You know, because I don’t think about running enough, I have to read about it too. I am just determined to be a runner. I want to be a runner. I am a runner.
Hubby really spoiled me today, but he says I’m worth it. He knows how much I enjoy running and wants me to have the best chance at it. Thank you, honey, for a fabulous day and for showering me with new goodies. I love you oodles!
Tuesdays sure do seem to come around quickly. And Tuesday means it’s True Confessions day. Today’s confessions are done with a little twist, they are all about running. This all came to me as I was running this morning. (I seem to have my best blogging ideas when I’m running…).
- I CONFESS that I run for me, myself, and I. I don’t run for anyone else.
- I CONFESS that running is as much mental as it is physical for me. I need to run not only for the sake of my butt and thighs, but also for my well-being. It is an outlet for every emotion that I am feeling on any given day. It is good for my mind and my heart, and it reminds me to just breathe.
- I CONFESS that I don’t feel the least bit guilty when I take an hour to run. When I put my headphones on and listen to whatever music fits my mood, I am lost in the music and the pounding of my feet on the pavement and how good it makes me feel.
- I CONFESS that if I did not run, it is highly likely that I would need some form of medication. I’ve been down the anti-depressant path before and while I am not opposed to taking medication when it is needed, I would much rather deal with it naturally, without other side effects. The benefits of running far outweigh any little pill I could take.
- I CONFESS that I have a hard time considering myself to be a runner, but every time I get out there and run, it’s a little easier.
- I CONFESS that some days it is really hard to get out there and run, but it is ALWAYS worth it when it’s done.
- I CONFESS that running makes me feel confident, strong, and healthy.
- I CONFESS that I don’t run fast and I don’t run pretty. But I put one foot in front of the other and keep going.
- I CONFESS that I am so very luck to live next to Eagle Lake Park, where the sunrises are amazing. Here is a a photo from this morning’s run…

6 days post- half marathon, and a couple days of light walking had me itching to get out this morning to see if I could get back to running. As the week went on, my legs felt better and better, as did my knee. I was good and went easy on it. This morning, I could wait no more. I went 3.11 miles in 39:51 minutes, doing 1:1 running/walking. Ended up being a better time than the first 5K of the half marathon, so I am very happy about that. And best news of all…. My legs felt great and no knee pain at all. Even now, hours later, it’s not bothering me.
These feet ‘o mine are pretty awesome. They take me where I want to go. Sometimes they complain, sometimes they make me go slower than I want. Sometimes they get me to my destination faster. Today they were in tune with the music I had blasting in my ears. I definitely respond to the music I’m listening to as far as speed. This morning’s random music choice was System Of A Down. Nothing like a little rage music to get these feet and legs ‘o mine moving.
After my 10 mile walk yesterday, which is approx. 6 1/2 miles more than I would do on an average day, I thought that I might not walk today. I would leave that decision until this morning, but I know when I was thinking about it last night, the idea of laying on the sofa all day sounded pretty nice.
Hubby went to play paintball this morning and I found myself craving the sunshine and I decided I would go out and walk. No running today, all walking. Not wanting to necessarily go to the park, I took the opportunity to go to downtown Clearwater to walk the causeway over to the beach. Plenty of sunshine there.
I filled my Camelbak with ice cold water and off I went. There is parking at the base of the causeway bridge (shaded no less!). I walked all the way over the causeway, south on the main strip and then back up again to the pier before heading back over the causeway. It was H-O-T and I was definitely getting my share of sunshine on my shoulders. This girl loves to be tan and I am loving the sunkissed look of my shoulders now.
I contemplated going over the bridge once more when I got back to my starting point but by the time I got there, I had walked 5.30 miles in 1 hr. 31 min. and I was tired, soaked with sweat, and hot as hell. I decided best not to be stupid about it and quit while I was ahead. As it is, my hubby wanted me to text him when I was done just so he wouldn’t worry about me in the heat. Even at 10 am this morning the heat index was in the upper 90’s and the UV index was VERY high at 10. Hence, my super sunkissed shoulders today. =)
I’ve walked a total of 15.30 miles in the past 2 days. That is more than I do in most weeks. I could not walk the rest of the week and be ahead of the game. Or I could walk as much as I can this week and see if I can hit 30 miles for the week. I wonder which one I’ll do….
So now that the walk is behind me, I’ve had a fantastic cool shower, and put aloe lotion on, I am ready to take over my spot again on the sofa, guilt free.

At the beginning of the March, I set a goal to walk 100 miles. I hit my 100 miles today, the 30th day of the month. I walked 28 of the 30 days. 26 of those days were outside, 2 were on the treadmill because I wasn’t going to let some silly weather get in the way of my goal.
I love setting goals for myself and achieving them. If only all goals were as easy to attain as this one. Yes, it took 30 days to reach it, and a lot of effort and sweat and tired legs. But every minute, every step, and every drop of sweat was worth it. I did it for me. And the best part, I had total control over it and made it happen.
Remember that will power I was searching for weeks ago, just before joining WW again? This is that will power I spoke of. That focus I needed to keep on track and take care of myself.
Oh how I love these trusty feet of mine… I know they will take me farther and farther down this road.
